This week in AP Lit we have been working a lot on our "What is Literature" project and so far it's been a really good learning opportunity for me. In my group my topic is, structure, and how structure relates of the ending of stories, in my case my story is The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin. So I really like that my topic is structure because I have learned about different types of fiction, literary and commercial fiction. Knowing the differences between the two types of fiction is really beneficial to me as a reader because it gives me a better understanding of what a story is focused on. Literary fiction is going to more focused on the character within the story, and how the character develops throughout the story. While commercial fiction is going to be focused toward the plot of the story, and the many climatic incidents within the story. Before this project I did not know the difference between the two types of fiction.

So this week in AP Lit I feel like we have been working on a lot of different concepts, and different projects. We have taken time to revise past creative writing pieces, looked at what literature is, and different elements of literature, we have also reading short stories. It's been a busy week. But everything that we have been doing has been beneficial to my reading and writing skills. Last week we did a lot of revising for past creative writing pieces, so I won't go into too much detail into that. But it is highly beneficial to me that I am given the time to look on my past writing. It gives me more time to complete sentences and concepts. In class we have also been looking at what literature is, the different elements of literature, and reading short stories. All three of those topics are going to relate to each other in a big way once we start this group writing project. Right now I am at the point where I am looking and getting a understanding of how structure relates with literature. From there I am going to relate structure to the short story I am reading. So this week we focused on revising our creative writing. Through that I did a lot of spelling and grammar mistakes. While we do our creative writing I am not giving myself a lot of time to take into account spelling and grammar. So revisiting my past creative writing have me a good chance to go back and fix those simple mistakes. Revising my past work also gave me time to build onto concepts that I had. A lot of my creative writing pieces were half thoughts, or ideas. This revising time gave me time to put together better sentences, and come up with concepts that work well with others. I was able to make my sentences come together, and overall they just made more sense. These sentences were also able to flow together a lot better. Rereading my work helps my writing stay on topic. Often times I have found myself getting slightly off topic, and by revisiting my work I am able to get myself back on the right topic. This week in AP Literature we watched a really interesting TED talk. And I was able to relate some of the concepts with my sociology class that I am taking at MMCC. The TED talk was about three different art pieces, and the speaker was telling stories about each painting, with minimum knowledge of the actual painting. This speaker was able to look at three different paintings, and come up with a story about each one. And this speaker was able to talk about why she saw the painting in that way, and how other people's perspective of the painting could change the entire story. Now in my sociology class we talk a lot about the three types of sociological perspective and how they affect today's society. There is functionalist perspective, which emphasization of structure and it is stability. Conflictive perspective, that states a person must know context outside of the topic to understand the tension that is happening around. The third perspective is interactionist perspective, which generalizes everyday forms of social interaction to explain society as a whole. Anyways it was really neat that I was able to connect what I am learning here at the high school, and what I am learning at MMCC. |
