The past couple of of weeks everything has been focused on what is tragedy, how it relates to life today, and how it relates literature. To be honest with you I feel like we haven't really learned a whole lot, like I get what tragedy is based on all the examples that have been given. I am surprised that we haven't talked about how the word tragedy relates to the word ironic. I think the two words can be used as similar meanings.
Anyways I don't really know what I want to write about for this blog post because I don't want it to be really similar to my last two tragedy posts... Plus there are is so much more blog posts that we have been doing in this class, like ahhhh this is a lot for me to do and I am falling behind because I have other things to do besides AP Lit. I have been trying to write this week 9 post for like three hours and I haven't gotten anywhere. Week 8 we read the poem "35/10" and I really enjoyed reading that poem and we went into depth. In class we reflected on what the mother in the poem was saying. It was interesting to me how the mother went from calling herself a servant, to accepting aging, she accepting aging very quickly. Week 9 was strictly tragedy targeted, so we read "Tragedy and the Common Man" and read Oedipus, and that gave me a better understanding of how tragedy affects us in our lives. And how tragedy ties to literature. We also watched a TED talk, askinging the question if we truly make choices for ourselves.

This week in AP Lit we have been working a lot on our "What is Literature" project and so far it's been a really good learning opportunity for me. In my group my topic is, structure, and how structure relates of the ending of stories, in my case my story is The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin. So I really like that my topic is structure because I have learned about different types of fiction, literary and commercial fiction. Knowing the differences between the two types of fiction is really beneficial to me as a reader because it gives me a better understanding of what a story is focused on. Literary fiction is going to more focused on the character within the story, and how the character develops throughout the story. While commercial fiction is going to be focused toward the plot of the story, and the many climatic incidents within the story. Before this project I did not know the difference between the two types of fiction. So this week in AP Lit I feel like we have been working on a lot of different concepts, and different projects. We have taken time to revise past creative writing pieces, looked at what literature is, and different elements of literature, we have also reading short stories. It's been a busy week. But everything that we have been doing has been beneficial to my reading and writing skills. Last week we did a lot of revising for past creative writing pieces, so I won't go into too much detail into that. But it is highly beneficial to me that I am given the time to look on my past writing. It gives me more time to complete sentences and concepts. In class we have also been looking at what literature is, the different elements of literature, and reading short stories. All three of those topics are going to relate to each other in a big way once we start this group writing project. Right now I am at the point where I am looking and getting a understanding of how structure relates with literature. From there I am going to relate structure to the short story I am reading. So this week we focused on revising our creative writing. Through that I did a lot of spelling and grammar mistakes. While we do our creative writing I am not giving myself a lot of time to take into account spelling and grammar. So revisiting my past creative writing have me a good chance to go back and fix those simple mistakes. Revising my past work also gave me time to build onto concepts that I had. A lot of my creative writing pieces were half thoughts, or ideas. This revising time gave me time to put together better sentences, and come up with concepts that work well with others. I was able to make my sentences come together, and overall they just made more sense. These sentences were also able to flow together a lot better. Rereading my work helps my writing stay on topic. Often times I have found myself getting slightly off topic, and by revisiting my work I am able to get myself back on the right topic. This week in AP Literature we watched a really interesting TED talk. And I was able to relate some of the concepts with my sociology class that I am taking at MMCC. The TED talk was about three different art pieces, and the speaker was telling stories about each painting, with minimum knowledge of the actual painting. This speaker was able to look at three different paintings, and come up with a story about each one. And this speaker was able to talk about why she saw the painting in that way, and how other people's perspective of the painting could change the entire story. Now in my sociology class we talk a lot about the three types of sociological perspective and how they affect today's society. There is functionalist perspective, which emphasization of structure and it is stability. Conflictive perspective, that states a person must know context outside of the topic to understand the tension that is happening around. The third perspective is interactionist perspective, which generalizes everyday forms of social interaction to explain society as a whole. Anyways it was really neat that I was able to connect what I am learning here at the high school, and what I am learning at MMCC. So this week of AP Literature I was really able to get a good understanding about what literature is. In class we read "Story versus literature: Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials Trilogy. In this text the writer gave really good examples, that I was able to relate to. One of the examples that stood out to me was the the differences between a book and that book's movie. Now a lot of people say that the book is always better than the movie, and I agree. Often people say that movies leave out too much details, or change parts of the story line. This writer stated that you can take a plot, the events, and the story part of a book and turn that into a movie. And what is left out in the movie, is the real literature. From that writer's point of view that states that literature is everything that a movie left out was able to let me make up my own example. While reading any book, in my mind I can set my own type of mood to the narration of each character(s). I can come up in my own mind what I want that character(s) to look like, talk like, dress like, the list can go on. But when I am watching a movie, everything is already set up for me. The way the character talks, will be the way the actor/actress protres their role. The way a character dresses will be based on how the director and others see them. Movies that are based off of books loose so much imagination. As a reader you can interpret a book in so many ways, but while watching that movie the movie is interpreted through someone else's eyes.
Wow week one of my senior year is complete… Knowing that this is my last year of high school just astounds me. How can I be a senior in high school? And where did the past three years go? I am really looking forward to my final year of high school, I really hope I can make some amazing memories. I want to give this school year my all. I want to make memories with my friends, be involved with my class, finish this year with great grades, but mostly just have fun. A lot of people say that high school passes by so quickly and for those of us who are still in high school to just enjoy the moment. A big goal for me this school year is to just enjoy the moment. Like many high school students I am ready to move on and go to college. And with that being said, I may want to push myself out of high school and little too quickly. Over and over again I hear and get told “enjoy high school”. I really want to enjoy this last year, and make the most of everything. There’s a time for everything. Usually the first week of school is a whole lot of boringness, lots of going over class rules and expectations. However since this is my last year of high school I tried putting a positive mindset to this first week. Having a positive outcome before the week really did a difference for me. I genuinely enjoyed being at school and even listening to the teachers give their first day of school lectures. Since I put myself in a positive mindset I was able to enjoy things that usually would have annoyed me, or made me feel bored. Instead I enjoyed listening to my teachers, and hearing what they would like to teach us this school year. |
